History

The Research Library of the Faculty of Social Sciences was inaugurated mainly for the benefit of the academic staff of the Faculty of Social Sciences. It was declared open officially on 22nd November 2004 by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya.

Our Services

Reference Service

Provides access to the library's reference collection. Reference materials are available to support teaching, learning, and research in the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Scanning and Photocopying

Offers scanning and photocopying services to support teaching, learning, and research needs, subject to copyright regulations.

Document Delivery Service

Provides access to requested journal articles, book chapters, and other academic documents that are available through the library's collections as well as e-databases, etc.

E-mail Service

Provides library updates, research information, announcements, and other important notifications to users via e-mail.

Workshops and Seminars

The Research Library and Information Centre conducts workshops and seminars on information literacy, research support, and the effective use of library resources and information searching on academic databases, etc.

Learn to Learn Workshop- A workshop designed primarily to help students develop effective learning, study, and examination preparation skills. Although the programme is specially organized during the examination period for students, it is open to all members of the University community.

Research Literacy Seminar Series - A seminar series conducted for the academic staff of the Faculty of Social Sciences to strengthen research competencies. The program covers research methodologies, scholarly communication, academic publishing, research databases, reference management, and other topics that support high-quality research and academic excellence.

Faculty InfoHub

Dedicated information service that delivers timely and relevant updates to faculty members through three specialised services

ResearchInfo- Information on upcoming conferences, seminars, workshops, and related research opportunities.
GovernmentInfo: Updates on government policies, regulations, and procedures relevant to academic and research activities.
E-NewsInfo: An e-news clipping service featuring important news and developments related to higher education, research, and especially social science disciplines.

Collection

Books

The Research Library and Information Centre houses a comprehensive collection of nearly 9050 books to support teaching, learning, and research. The collection has a strong emphasis on social sciences, covering disciplines such as economics, geography, history, international studies, library and information science, mass communication, political science, sociology, and related fields.

In addition to social science resources, the library also maintains a selection of books from other subject areas to support interdisciplinary learning and research. The collection includes publications issued by the University of Kelaniya, other universities, government institutions, professional organizations, and both local and international publishers. New titles are added regularly to ensure users have access to current, authoritative academic resources.

Periodicals

The library maintains a collection of periodicals to keep users informed about current developments in their fields of study and research. The collection includes magazines, newsletters, reports, bulletins, and other serial publications published by universities, government institutions, research organizations, and professional bodies.

Journals

The library provides access to a valuable collection of scholarly journals to support academic research and knowledge development. The collection includes journals published by the University of Kelaniya, other universities, research institutes, professional associations, and national and international publishers.

These journals cover a wide range of disciplines, with particular emphasis on the social sciences, and provide access to peer-reviewed research articles, review papers, and scholarly discussions. The journal collection enables academic staff in the Faculty of Social Sciences to stay informed about the latest research findings and developments in their respective fields.

Library User Guide

Welcome to the Research Library and Information Centre of the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya. The library is dedicated to supporting teaching, learning, and research by providing access to high-quality academic resources and information services. To ensure a comfortable and productive environment for all users, please observe the following guidelines.

Library Membership

The library is open exclusively to the academic staff of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Kelaniya. Library facilities, collections, and services are provided to support their teaching, research, and professional activities.

Library Collection

The library maintains a reference collection consisting of books, journals, periodicals, and other research materials. These resources are available for in-library use only and cannot be loaned.

Library Rules and Guidelines

Only academic staff of the Faculty of Social Sciences are permitted to use the library.
Personal books and printed materials brought from outside are not permitted inside the library, unless prior permission has been obtained from the library staff.
After reading a book or other reading materials, please leave them on the reading table. Do not return materials to the shelves, as library staff will ensure they are re-shelved correctly.
Before leaving the library, please sign the Attendance Log Book.
Please maintain silence to provide a comfortable study and research environment for all users.
Food and beverages are prohibited inside the library.
Handle library materials with care. Do not write, underline, fold pages, or otherwise damage library resources.

Library Etiquette

Users are expected to respect the library environment by maintaining cleanliness, minimising noise, and using library resources responsibly. Cooperation with these guidelines helps preserve the collection and ensures that all users benefit from a pleasant and productive research environment.

Morning: 8.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m.

Afternoon: 1.00 p.m. - 4.00 p.m.
